It is made of 26 gauge and 30 gauge galvanized metal and steel with a wooden treadle step for comfort. The door is spring loaded to prevent a large rat from pushing its way into the feeder and the treadle is set back far enough that even a large rat can't depress the treadle and reach the feed.
As many as ten birds can share a feeder without excessive wait times or conflict. Chickens learn to operate the feeder very quickly, it is as natural as roosting to step onto the treadle. Most flocks can be shown how to step on the treadle simply by letting them get a little hungry, then showing them the feed by stepping on the corner of the treadle. Let them eat for a few seconds, then gently shove them off the treadle and repeat. If they don't pick it up immediately come back in two hours and show them again.
